Questions about transparency have intensified since the documents emerged last month as part of declassification efforts initiated during the Trump administration. File Image.

The CIA has acknowledged a connection between one of its agents and Lee Harvey Oswald prior to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Recently declassified files reveal that George Joannides, a psychological warfare specialist at the agency, was involved in operations intersecting with Oswald’s activities. Working under the alias Howard Mark Gebler, Joannides maintained ties with the Cuban Student Directorate, a group that had confronted Oswald in New Orleans.

This admission comes after decades of flat denial from the CIA with respect to the infamous assassination. The agency had long rejected any association with the Cuban Student Directorate, which Joannides covertly funded through CIA channels.
