Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis endorsed legislation on Tuesday banning fluoride and similar substances unrelated to water quality from serving as additives in the water supply.

The legislation signed by DeSantis ensures that only a “water quality additive” can be combined with tap water in the state of Florida, meaning that the chemicals and substances must help the water meet drinking water standards, remove contaminants, or otherwise increase water quality.

“With wide access to topical fluoride, there’s no need to medicate entire communities without their consent,” DeSantis wrote on social media after endorsing the new legislation. “The Free State of Florida says no to forced medication, and we’re proud to lead the nation on this effort.”
