Democrats and Big Labor are two peas in a pod.
Teachers’ unions, labor unions and unions of all sorts overwhelmingly back Democrats running for political office.
Over 90 percent of all political donations from unions go towards Democrats.
And Democrats are easily persuaded to pay back Big Labor with newfound power to force working families to pay for the “privilege” of getting or keeping a job.
Look no further than what is about to take place in Michigan where Democrats have complete control of state government for the first time in decades.
One of the first priorities being touted by Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) just days after her reelection is working with the new Democrat majorities in the Legislature to repeal the state’s right to work law.
Michigan, which is considered the birthplace of the labor movement, shocked the world when it passed a right to work law in 2012.
Right to work laws restore the rights of workers to opt out of union membership as a condition of employment.
Once relegated to only states in the South or West, right to work laws saw a surge of support grow in the wake of the Tea Party wave in 2010 which led to traditional union strongholds like Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin and even West Virginia becoming right to work states in the last decade.
The right to associate as protected under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution assumes the right to not associate.
As Thomas Jefferson once said, “To compel a man to furnish funds for the ideas he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.”
In the absence of state right to work laws, this is exactly what is happening to millions of workers across the country.
“To compel a man to furnish funds for the ideas he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.” ~ Thomas Jefferson
Workers in non-right to work states are forced under federal law to be represented by a union that they didn’t choose or even want. This condition is called “collective bargaining” (better described as monopoly bargaining), and it allows a union to demand fees from all workers in a workplace regardless of their desire to be represented by the union.
This is like a person being kidnapped, thrown into a taxi and then being forced to pay for the taxi ride.
Union dues are in turn used for many illicit purposes, including enriching union bosses and fueling the Big Labor political machine and its Democrat candidates.
Ultimately this is a war over political power and the unions’ ability to force workers to pay for politics that they don’t support.
Pro-abortion policies, gun control, higher taxes, more burdensome government regulations -- you name it. Union bosses are supporting virtually every left-leaning political cause because left-leaning candidates are happy to take union money.
The last decade has seen conservatives win big to free millions of Americans from onerous forced union laws. There are now a total of 27 states which celebrate the right to work.
The next several months will tell if Democrats have the will to restrict worker freedom in their newly-won majority states.
