House Republicans propose tax on migrant remittances

The proposal has gained traction among some Republican officials. Vice President JD Vance sponsored similar legislation as a member of the Senate last year.

House Republicans included a 5% excise tax on remittances in President Donald Trump’s priority bill, targeting money transfers sent by foreign workers back to their home countries.

 

The tax would affect over forty million people, including green card holders and visa holders, though American citizens would be exempt.
