Republican members of the Ohio House moved to override a veto on a bill that would ban so-called sex-change hormones and surgeries for minors.

Ohio Republican Governor Mike DeWine generated controversy last month when he vetoed the legislation, which introduces prohibitions on hormones and surgeries meant to alter or remove healthy body parts during a supposed gender transition. The bill also establishes rights for parents who raise their children consistently with their true sex and protects female sports leagues from self-identified transgender students with physical advantages over women.

Ohio House members voted sixty-five to twenty-eight along party lines to override the veto. Lawmakers in the Ohio Senate are expected to vote later this month on the veto override.

Ohio State Republican Representative Gary Click, who sponsored the legislation, characterized the Wednesday vote in a statement as a “victory for women and children in Ohio.”

“It is hard to fathom that we live in a society that would tell children that they need drugs and scalpels to live their authentic lives or that treats women as second-class citizens in their own spaces,” he remarked. “These are horrible, harmful, and hurtful messages for Ohio’s youth and it is remarkable that we would even need a law to affirm these common-sense policies.”

Click previously issued another statement expressing disagreement with the veto but insisting that he never questioned the “heart” or the “character” of DeWine. “I commend him for digging through the details of this legislation and for speaking to several qualified individuals capable of shedding light on this issue,” he commented.

Several conservative-leaning states have recently restricted or prohibited hormone procedures and surgeries on children, noting the irreversible physical harm rendered to patients and the biological impossibility of changing individual sex. Leftist activist groups have been advocating for increased legality of the procedures at the state and federal levels.
