Schumer open to impeaching Trump for a third time

The remarks come as Schumer faces pressure from the progressive wing of his party over an apparent refusal to delay a Republican bill that would avoid a partial government shutdown.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, voiced interest over the weekend in his party potentially trying to impeach President Donald Trump for a third time.

Schumer remarked during a Sunday interview with CNN anchor Dana Bash that he concurs with Georgia Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff, who said during a recent town hall event that he believes Trump should once more face impeachment only months into his second term.

“Well, look, right now, President Trump is violating the rule of law in every way,” Schumer said. “We’re fighting him every single day in every way, and our goal is to show the American people over and over again, whether it’s the economy, whether it’s tariffs, whether it’s Russia and overseas, and whether it’s rule of law, how bad he is, and two years is too far away to predict.”

Any impeachment effort would indeed have to come in two years, since the Democrats would likely have to secure the narrowly divided House before approving articles of impeachment.

“I’m fighting the fight every day, as is our caucus, in a united and successful way, as you have seen by your poll and other polls,” the lawmaker commented to Bash. “We’re showing America how bad Trump is, and showing that Republicans who embrace Trump do so at their peril.”

Democrats previously attempted to impeach Trump on two separate occasions, the first time in 2019 for alleged abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, and the second time in 2021 for incitement of insurrection. Members of the Senate ultimately acquitted Trump both times.

The remarks come as Schumer faces pressure from the progressive wing of his party over an apparent refusal to delay a Republican bill that would avoid a partial government shutdown. One recent poll indicated that Schumer saw his favorability in New York reach a twenty-year low.
