Suicide risk twelve times higher for adults who undergo transgender surgeries, new study says

The study revealed that roughly 3.5% of adults who had the surgeries were hospitalized for suicide attempts in comparison to 0.3% of the overall hospitalized adult population.

Individuals who undergo so-called sex-change surgeries are twelve times more likely than other adults to be hospitalized for suicide, according to a new study from the University of Texas.

Researchers analyzed emergency hospitalization data between 2003 and 2023 in order to examine suicide risks for those who undergo transgender surgical procedures. The study revealed that roughly 3.5% of adults who had the surgeries were hospitalized for suicide attempts in comparison to 0.3% of the overall hospitalized adult population.

“Gender-affirming surgery is significantly associated with elevated suicide attempt risks,” the study concluded, claiming the findings point to a need for “post-procedure psychiatric support.”

Those who have had transgender surgeries were also more than three times more likely to be deceased relative to the general adult population. Researchers also examined emergency hospitalizations among those who have had vasectomies and other sterilization procedures, finding that their risks for suicide were slightly higher than the overall population.

The study noted that there exists a “controversy surrounding the benefits of gender-affirmation surgery on mental health” and a persistent suicide trend among people who claim to be members of the opposite sex “despite the increasing acceptance of transgender individuals.”

Many critics of transgenderism indeed say that the irreversible physical harm they render and the biological impossibility of changing individual sex help to explain the harmful impacts of transgender surgeries on mental health. The procedures create other medical issues that tend to decrease life expectancy and result in patients becoming dependent on future treatments.

The study from the University of Texas did not consider the association of transgender surgeries with the mental health of minors. At least twenty-three states have now passed prohibitions on transgender surgeries and hormone procedures for children. Other studies have indicated that the procedures do not have any benefit for the mental wellness of children.
