The employees were provided a deadline of April 14 to accept the deferred resignation offer. One internal email said they are allowed to leave their positions at the IRS as soon as April 28.

Other efforts to downsize the IRS, which had their staff rosters expanded under legislation signed by former President Joe Biden, include offering a previous deferred resignation which 4,700 employees took and placing 7,300 probationary employees on administrative leave.

One spokesperson for the Treasury Department told the media that they are “committed to ensuring that efficiency is realized while providing the collections, privacy, and customer service the American people deserve.” The statement added that the cuts will enable the “consolidation of critical support functions” that are “vital to improve both efficiency and quality of service.”
