President-Elect Donald Trump unveiled his intentions to retake the Panama Canal amid what he says are elevated fares imposed on American companies and increased influence from China.
Trump wished a “Merry Christmas” in a sarcastic Wednesday social media post to the “wonderful soldiers of China, who are lovingly, but illegally, operating the Panama Canal,” contending that Panama is meanwhile making American companies fund billions in repairs.
The incoming commander-in-chief also said he would nominate Kevin Marino Cabrera, who serves as a commissioner for Miami-Dade County, to work as ambassador to Panama in another social media post, repeating that the country is “ripping us off on the Panama Canal.”
The infrastructure project was completed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers with the support of President Theodore Roosevelt, significantly reducing the time for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans while avoiding the dangerous tip of South America.
President Jimmy Carter returned the project to Panama in 1977, with the Latin American country taking full control in 1999 after a period of joint operations between Americans and Panamanians.
Trump previously noted that thousands of Americans died building the Panama Canal and that Chinese interests have since encroached on the project. “Our Navy and commerce have been treated in a very unfair and injudicious way,” he wrote. “The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous, especially knowing the extraordinary generosity that has been bestowed to Panama.”
Discussion of retaking the Panama Canal comes as Trump floats expansion into Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, although the country has said the island is not for sale.
“For purposes of national security and freedom throughout the world, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” he said.
