President-Elect Donald Trump condemned the administration of President Joe Biden for selling portions of the border wall, vowing that he would halt the effort when he returns to office.
Massive sections of the wall on the southern border have been sold in recent weeks, according to video obtained by The Daily Wire, which showed unused sections of the wall loaded onto trucks and hauled away. Trump said at a press conference this week that he spoke to officials in Texas about the situation and that the effort was subverting his plans to rebuild the wall.
“The administration is trying to sell it for five cents on the dollar knowing that we’re getting ready to put it up,” Trump noted. “It’s almost a criminal act. They know that we’re going to use it and if we don’t have it we’re going to have to rebuild it and it will cost double what it cost years ago.”
One letter from Missouri Republican Senator Eric Schmitt obtained in another report by The Daily Wire indeed revealed that the materials have been sold for a fraction of their value. In one case nearly 16,000 pounds of steel border wall sections were sold for a total of $105.
“These border wall materials will cost tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars to replace and will be critical to stem the record flow of millions of illegal immigrants who were welcomed across our border during the Biden administration,” the letter from Schmitt continued.
Biden had promised to facilitate a peaceful transition of power in the coming weeks. Trump nevertheless warned that the intentional sale of the border wall reveals the opposite intentions.
“That has nothing to do with a smooth transition. That has to do with people really trying to stop our nation,” the incoming commander-in-chief added in his remarks. “All it means really is that we’re going to spend hundreds of millions of dollars more, not even talking about the time.”
Critics of current federal immigration policy observe that lackluster border security enables human trafficking and other crimes. Biden previously insisted that his softening of border enforcement did not contribute to increased illegal immigration levels over the past four years.
