President Donald Trump signed multiple executive orders this week meant to bolster the American coal industry in an effort to decrease energy costs and stimulate the economy.

The commander-in-chief signed orders that extended the time horizons for closing coal plants, allowed coal leasing on public lands, and instructed agencies to determine how coal power can fulfill rising energy demand from artificial intelligence and other technological innovations.

“The United States is experiencing an unprecedented surge in electricity demand driven by rapid technological advancements, including the expansion of artificial intelligence data centers and an increase in domestic manufacturing,” one order said. “This increase in demand, coupled with existing capacity challenges, places a significant strain on our nation’s electric grid.”

Another executive order directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to examine and take action against “state laws and policies that burden the use of domestic energy resources.”

That includes laws claiming to address “climate change,” to advance “environmental, social, and governance” initiatives, or to ensure “environmental justice.” The order said “these state policies raise energy prices, disrupt supply reliability, and degrade quality of life for families nationwide.”

“President Trump is committed to halting efforts by individual states to impose their regulatory preferences on the entire nation, defending federalism, and safeguarding Americans from overreaching, ideologically driven state policies,” a fact sheet from the White House asserted.

Trump vowed to decrease energy prices, which have been elevated in recent years, on the campaign trail. Another executive action two months ago created a National Energy Dominance Council composed largely of senior Cabinet members with the task of advising Trump about “how best to exercise his authority to produce more energy to make America energy dominant.”
