Biden denies responsibility for border crisis

Reporters for Time asked whether the suspension of various Trump administration immigration measures led to the record number of illegal crossings over the past four years, a suggestion which Biden denied.

President Joe Biden insisted on Tuesday that his softening of border enforcement policy did not contribute to runaway illegal immigration over the past four years.

Customs and Border Protection has encountered more than 7.5 million individuals entering the country illegally since Biden assumed office. Reporters for Time asked in an interview whether his suspension of various Trump administration immigration measures led to the record number of illegal crossings over the past four years, a suggestion which Biden denied.

“Were you wrong to lift any of those measures?” they asked. “If I was wrong, it’s because I took too long,” he insisted. When asked if he would reinstate Remain in Mexico, he simply said “No.”

The interview with Time was published as Biden signed an executive order which stops asylum requests after the average number of daily encounters exceeds 2,500. Americans are now most likely to say that immigration is the “most important problem” facing the country, according to a survey from Gallup, marking a surge in concern on the matter ahead of the fall elections.

Another survey from Axios found that 51% of the public would support mass deportations, a solution to the immigration crisis repeatedly floated by former President Donald Trump. Even as 68% of Republicans back the policy, some 42% of Democrats reported that they also agree with mass deportations, while roughly 47% of independents said the same.

Biden also said in the Time interview that voters should not be concerned about his age, since he would be eighty-six years old at the conclusion of his second term. “I can do it better than anybody you know,” he responded. “You’re looking at me, I can take you too.”
