Border Congressman: America needs more than Title 42

The maintenance of Trump-era border policy was met with praise from Republicans, while Democrats insist on pushing for amnesty.

Arizona Congressman Andy Biggs, one of Congress’s leading proponents of border security, participates at a panel at CPAC Texas 2022.

Influential Freedom Caucus member, Congressman Andy Biggs (R-AZ) says Title 42 isn’t enough.

Biggs praised the Court’s ruling and stressed the importance of maintaining Title 42 during a time when the United States is experiencing a significant crisis at the border. However, the Arizona congressman believes that the Biden administration is not doing enough to deter illegal immigration.

“Title 42 remains important for border security but until the Biden Administration starts enforcing our immigration laws and halts the release of illegal aliens into our country, we will continue to see millions of illegal aliens pour into our country,” Biggs tweeted.

Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich has repeatedly locked horns with the Biden administration on issues concerning border security and border security. He has voiced his frustration with “having to go to federal court to sue the Biden administration just to get them to do their job."

Brnovich continued highlighting how the Biden administration has failed to protect the border:

The Biden administration has criminalized and incentivized people breaking the law. So this is important because the states have very few tools in their toolbox to fight the losses of the Biden administration. We have seen a record amount of people break the law and illegally enter the country and seems like Arizonans are paying the cost not only fiscally in unreimbursed health care costs and jail costs and education costs, we’re also paying the cost every day in American lives lost.

In light of the Supreme Court Title 42 order, Brnovich stated that he was glad the court made "the right decision.”

Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) has also butted heads with the Biden administration, and has even taken proactive border security measures such as Operation Lone Star to tackle the ongoing border crisis. In response to the Title 42 Supreme Court order, Abbott tweeted the following statement:

Title 42 remains for now.  It's long past time for Biden to secure the border.  Texas won't wait for him to act.  Texas National Guard & @TxDPS continue to secure the border & stop the flow of deadly drugs, weapons, & people into our country.

Commenting on the Supreme Court order, President Joe Biden said that terminating Title 42 was “overdue.” At a press conference, Biden told reporters that "The court is not going to decide until June, apparently.” He added that “in the meantime, we have to enforce it, but I think it's overdue [ending Title 42].”

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas used the recent Supreme Court ruling to continue pushing for amnesty and expanding legal immigration. DHS officials published a statement calling for immigration reform in light of this recent ruling:

We will continue to manage the border, but we do so within the constraints of a decades-old immigration system that everyone agrees is broken. We need Congress to pass the comprehensive immigration reform legislation President Biden proposed the day he took office.

El Paso, Texas has been a focal point of the current crisis at the border. The Sentinel previously reported on the border city of El Paso, Texas having to announce a state of emergency on December 17, 2022 in anticipation of a potential termination of Title 42.

Mayor Oscar Leeser, the mayor of El Paso, has been vocal about the crisis his city has had to confront. Commenting on the Title 42 order on Tuesday, Leeser went on CNN where he declared that the situation at the border goes “beyond Title 42.”

We can’t continue to go on in this manner with a broken immigration system that has to be fixed,” the mayor proclaimed. “It’s bigger than the United States. I have to work with the UN and countries around us to be able to fix it.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court voted 5-4 to issue an order that maintains Title 42, a Trump-era border policy that grants border patrol agents the power to expel migrants who pose a potential threat to public health. As The Sentinel previously reported, Title 42 was enacted during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and was designed to contain the spread of the virus.

The recent Title 42 order comes against the backdrop of an ever-growing crisis at the southern border. Since President Joe Biden assumed the presidency in early 2021, his administration has been marked by a notable influx of illegal aliens. Per data from United States Customs and Border Protection, Border Patrol agents have carried out over 2 million Title 42 expulsions since the border policy went into effect.
