Massachusetts Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren called on Sunday for a “pathway to citizenship” for millions of illegal aliens and additional budgetary support for immigrant housing.
President Joe Biden recently signed an order offering legal status, as well as a path to residency and citizenship, to half a million illegal aliens married to Americans. Warren said in an interview that Congress should advance legislation extending similar offers to more illegal aliens.
“We need a pathway to citizenship for people who are here, for spouses, for dreamers, for essential workers, for people who serve in our military, for people who come to school here and want to help make this a stronger country,” the lawmaker contended.
Authorities in Massachusetts, which has eight sanctuary cities, have faced challenges to their budgets and other public resources as they attempt to handle influxes of illegal aliens. Warren also called for “financial support for all of the places that are now housing migrants.”
The remarks from Warren come as voters become wary of elevated illegal immigration under the Biden administration, with a majority of the public supporting mass deportations for those who entered the country illegally. Warren repeatedly insisted in the interview that Biden is seeking to secure the border but has been blocked by Republican lawmakers in Congress.
The fact sheet announcing the amnesty policy for illegal alien spouses likewise asserted that Biden has “taken action to secure the border” and accused Republican lawmakers of placing “partisan politics ahead of national security.” Biden meanwhile expanded federal health insurance eligibility through the Affordable Care Act last month to more illegal aliens.
Customs and Border Protection has encountered more than 7.5 million individuals entering the country illegally since Biden assumed office. Americans are most likely to say that immigration is the “most important problem” facing the country, according to a survey from Gallup.
