Elon Musk asserted that the Starlink satellite internet service run by SpaceX would have assisted more Hurricane Helene survivors without “lawfare” from the federal government.
Hurricane Helene made landfall last weekend and caused widespread destruction across several southern states. Biden administration officials announced that FEMA would deploy forty Starlink satellite systems across North Carolina to assist with communication as hundreds more were deployed across the state by private individuals.
Musk meanwhile accused the FCC of engaging in “contemptible political lawfare” by revoking a contract with the federal government two years ago, contending that SpaceX could have assisted more with the relief if the Biden administration never unreasonably nixed the deal.
“Had the FCC not illegally revoked the SpaceX Starlink award, it would probably have saved lives in North Carolina,” Musk further asserted on social media. “Lawfare costs lives.”
The multibillionaire entrepreneur, who has emerged as a prominent critic of President Joe Biden and a supporter of former President Donald Trump, started the rocket company more than two decades ago. Starlink allows for individuals who live in rural areas or who travel in remote locations to access the internet through a network of satellites launched into orbit by the firm.
Musk added that SpaceX has “sent as many Starlink terminals as possible” to affected areas and commended Trump for alerting him to more people “who need Starlink internet in North Carolina.”
