The family of the influential Blackfeet chief whose likeness was depicted by the Washington Redskins logo for several decades renewed their calls for the retired logo to be restored.

The face of John Two Guns White Calf was removed from the Redskins logo four years ago amid mounting pressure from social justice activists, even as surveys showed that the vast majority of Native Americans were not offended by the depiction, while the team was renamed the Washington Commanders. The family of Two Guns White Calf said in an interview with Fox News that they want the story of their ancestor retold and his legacy honored by the team.

“The fans want him back and we want him back,” Thomas White Calf, a great nephew of Two Guns White Calf, told the outlet, which also interviewed his mother, Delphine White Calf. “Our ancestor was the most famous and most photographed Native in history. Two Guns was also the face on the Indian head nickel. I’m proud of him. The Blackfeet are proud of him.”

Two Guns White Calf was an advocate for the preservation of Native American culture in the early twentieth century and frequently spoke to visitors of Glacier National Park about his tribe.

The logo used by the team between 1972 and 2020 was designed by Walter “Blackie” Wetzel, another influential tribal leader for the Blackfeet. Officials with the Washington Commanders informed Fox News that they established “a positive relationship” with Ryan Wetzel, the grandson of Blackie Wetzel, at the suggestion of Montana Republican Senator Steve Daines.

The lawmaker frequently advocates for restoring the logo that features Two Guns White Calf. “I strongly believe any franchise or organization should be honored to be associated with the patriotism and pride of Native Americans, a demographic that serves in the United States Armed Forces at a rate higher than all others,” Daines commented earlier this year.

The team does not currently have plans to restore the former logo, a spokesperson for the Washington Commanders noted to Fox News, which reported that the White Calf family was never consulted about the removal of their ancestor from the logo four years ago.

“The legendary Blackfeet logo that was championed by Blackie Wetzel and based on the likeness of Chief Two Guns White Calf must be restored,” Daines said in an email to Fox News.
