Justice Department officials scrapped a Biden administration policy that forced automatic license revocation for gun dealers, marking a shift in how the federal government handles firearms enforcement.

The controversial “zero tolerance” approach, which required the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives to pull federal firearms licenses for willful violations, was nixed following a sweeping review of current firearm regulations from the past four years ordered by President Donald Trump.

Before the repeal, the ATF had no choice but to revoke licenses from dealers, even for paperwork errors and other minor mistakes, as noted by Gun Owners of America. Now the agency regains discretion in handling violations.

“For years, the zero tolerance policy has been a tool of political retribution, targeting gun stores and Americans who were simply trying to exercise their rights,” Gun Owners of America senior vice president Erich Pratt said in a statement. “This is what pro-gun leadership looks like.”

Gun shops and industry groups had indeed blasted the zero tolerance policy as excessive, arguing that the requirement forced dealers to shutter over minor inspection hiccups that previously would have been fixed through standard compliance procedures.

Gun control activists are not pleased about the reversal. Emma Brown, the executive director of Giffords, warned that “putting gun dealers who break the law back in business will increase crime.”
