Police arrested a man who allegedly broke into a Michigan home and threatened multiple occupants inside, leading to a shootout that left one of the residents and his girlfriend injured.

Benjamin Nevers and a friend had recently returned from the Bahamas when two individuals appeared on security cameras entering the home through a window, according to local news. One of the individuals was seen on security video ordering his friend to lay on the ground.

The security footage then showed Nevers holding his handgun as he waited for the intruder to enter his room, where his girlfriend was sleeping under the covers in the bed behind him.

Nevers was injured in the foot during the shootout, but the alleged intruder was also shot and was recorded by the security cameras struggling to exit the home. Police arrested the alleged intruder and identified him as Phillip Price, who faces charges like assault with intent to murder.

“My foot completely shattered,” Nevers recounted in an interview with local news. “They have screws and plates, immediate surgery, and then I got hit in the back right here as well.”

Though he had relatively minor wounds, his girlfriend had a much more serious injury. “I know she got shot in the back, and it traveled up and it hit her kidney, and I think it’s lodged in her chest right now,” Nevers continued. “They can’t get the bullet out because it’s too dangerous.”

Nevers recalled that he barely had enough time to grab his handgun and cock the weapon, after which he “just sat there and kind of waited” since he knew they would “come to my room.”

Police indeed believe that the victims and the suspects knew one another and that Price knew which objects he was trying to steal. “The bag that they tried to get was right there, and there was a bottle of Don Julio in it and a chocolate bar, and then there was a studio microphone that I have. These guys did this for nothing,” Nevers continued. “I’m just happy everybody is alive and well. I’m kind of glad the guy who shot me is still alive too. I don’t want to kill nobody.”
