Gun Pulse: Texas bill would let students take gun safety elective

The freshman lawmaker told his colleagues that the bill was his first and that the measure would simply “allow high school students to take a hunter education classroom course” if they desire.

Texas lawmakers will consider legislation to establish a firearms safety elective in schools, hearing justification from supporters of the bill in the Texas House Public Education Committee.

Texas Republican State Representative Pat Curry submitted the legislation to require that the Texas State Board of Education, in consultation with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, develop new “curriculum requirements for a lifetime recreation and outdoor pursuits course.”

The elective would include “hunter education component that a school district may offer to students to satisfy the physical education credit” already required in government schools.
