The husband of former Missouri Democratic Representative Cori Bush was indicted on Thursday for allegedly defrauding the federal government under lockdown stimulus programs.
Cortney Merritts filed “fraudulent applications” with the agency that allowed him to collect over $20,000 in taxpayer funds through the Economic Injury Disaster Loan Program and Paycheck Protection Program, but he allegedly used the money for his “personal benefit and enjoyment.”
Merritts received an $8,500 loan in July 2020 for a moving business that he called “Vetted Couriers,” while one day later, he submitted another loan application for a sole proprietorship he called “Cortney Merritts,” claiming to have a business that employed ten additional people.
