Justice Department sues Los Angeles over sanctuary policies

Federal attorneys assert that the city intentionally discriminates against immigration agents, restricting their access to both municipal property and detained individuals.

The Department of Justice has filed suit against Los Angeles, challenging the city’s sanctuary policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

The legal action names Los Angeles Democratic Mayor Karen Bass and the Los Angeles City Council as defendants, with the Trump administration’s case resting primarily on Supremacy Clause violations.

According to court documents, the Justice Department argues that the refusal to work with immigration officials has directly contributed to public disorder, rioting, and vandalism. These incidents required deployment of both California National Guard troops and Marines to the city last month in order to restore order.

“Sanctuary policies were the driving cause of the violence, chaos, and attacks on law enforcement that Americans recently witnessed in Los Angeles,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement released alongside the filing.
