Six pro-life Christians are now facing eleven years in federal prison as the Biden administration continues to weaponize the Justice Department against their political opponents.
The Christians were each found guilty of one misdemeanor over blocking the entrance of a Tennessee abortion mill under the FACE Act, a federal law which prohibits interfering with “reproductive health services,” and one felony of conspiracy against rights.
The defendants faced a “David versus Goliath” fight from the very beginning as the judge severely limited evidence that could be presented in their defense, explicitly forbidding references to phrases like “saving babies” and “God’s law is superior to man’s,” and other statements that could cause the jury to sympathize with their Christian convictions.
Worse than that, the judge would not even allow video of what happened to be shown during the trial for fear that the footage would bias the jury in favor of the pro-lifers. This is because a simple examination of the actions taken by these pro-life activists that led to their prosecution makes clear that this entire case is an obvious instance of political targeting.
What exactly did these Christians do that led to their prosecution?
Did they commit acts of violence, throw bricks through windows, or set buildings on fire?
Did they make threats of physical bodily harm to anyone, block highways and interstates during rush-hour traffic, or destroy entire cities and towns?
They did not do anything of the sort. Their crime was standing in the doorway of an abortion clinic while praying and singing worship songs.
Much like what has happened with the defendants in the January 6 fiasco, upon examination of the video evidence, no reasonable person would conclude that the level of criminal prosecution and potential imprisonment that has been imposed is just. The fact that this case amounts to political persecution is highlighted by comparing the actions of the Justice Department here with how they behaved toward violent far-left activists over the course of the last several years.
When radical leftist activists committed acts of extreme violence, theft, and arson, resulting in the burning down of entire cities, prosecutors did next to nothing. In addition, pro-abortion activists have set fire to several dozen pregnancy resource centers since Roe v. Wade was overturned, and again, the Justice Department has prosecuted few of these actual terrorists.
These six pro-life Christians are simply the most recent victims in the tyrannical Biden administration endeavor to weaponize the Justice Department against their enemies.
Yet these Christians have responded to the persecution they are facing with faith and boldness.
I had the opportunity to travel to Tennessee and join a series of prayer meetings throughout the week before the trial. I was overwhelmed by the fearless and joyful conviction with which these men and women carried themselves.
Their overwhelming focus before, during, and after the trial was to remove the attention from themselves and direct people to remember the injustice to which the preborn are subjected.
While others rightly prayed for their deliverance, the accused repeatedly prayed that God would use their trial to advance the truth of the gospel and shed light on the suffering of the preborn.
At one point, one of them even interrupted a prayer meeting to request that we would specifically pray that the Lord might use this trial to bring both the judge and the prosecution to salvation. He also admonished us to remember in our prayers that while we should pray for justice to be done to the wicked, Christ also commands us to bless those who persecute us.
He then prayed a prayer of blessing over the judge and the prosecution.
During the trial there was no discussion of deliverance. There was no celebration during moments when the defense attorneys prevailed on behalf of the Christians. Instead, when the gospel was able to shine through, or when there was an instance where the suffering of the preborn was made vivid, these were the moments that they celebrated.
When the verdict came down and the six pro-lifers were found guilty on all charges, as the weight of the verdict settled in, still there was no sign of shrinking back on their part.
As one of the accused announced the verdict, his exact words were: “Guilty on all charges. Worthy is the Lamb!”
While the judge and the prosecution displayed a clear and persistent tendency toward tyranny and injustice, these six Christians shined forth as a brilliant example of suffering for the sake of righteousness. The evidence of the grace of God at work in the life of a Christian, after all, best abounds when they are faithful amid suffering and trials.
I am tremendously grateful for the example of these pro-lifers. While enduring persecution is their role amid this instance of tyranny, we have the duty to speak on their behalf.
Christians can no longer sit back quietly and watch the tyrants devour our rights and liberties. The degree of lawlessness and prejudice that has been used to prosecute these six Christians on the part of the Justice Department should be a rallying cry for us all.
In a time like this, every Christian must use every platform at their disposal to speak on behalf of these six pro-lifers, and to demand that justice be immediately restored on their behalf.
We must also follow in their example by sacrificing our time and energies to end the holocaust of abortion in our land with the power of Jesus and his gospel.
