Video of a conversation between former President Donald Trump and independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. about the potential dangers of vaccines was leaked on social media.
The leaked footage, which appears to have been posted by his son, Bobby Kennedy III, was later deleted from social media. The two presidential candidates are heard in the footage expressing concerns with the childhood vaccine system in the United States.
Trump remarked to Kennedy that “something is wrong with that whole system” and recalled his previous remarks expressing support for “small doses” of vaccines. The Republican nominee told Kennedy that he would “love for you to serve” alongside a potential second administration.
“When you feed a baby a vaccination that is like thirty-eight different vaccines, and it looks like it’s meant for a horse, not a ten-pound or twenty-pound baby,” Trump commented, “then you see the baby starting to change radically, I’ve seen it too many times, then you hear that it doesn’t have an impact, right? You and I talked about that a long time ago.”
Kennedy released a statement on Tuesday saying he was “taping with an in-house videographer” when Trump called him and apologized for the leaked footage. “I should have ordered the videographer to stop recording immediately. I am mortified that this was posted.”
Trump was previously pressed about his past remarks on vaccines during a 2015 presidential primary debate, when moderators asked retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson what he thought about an assertion from Trump that vaccines lead to autism. Carson said that studies “have not demonstrated that there is any correlation between vaccinations and autism” but added that “there should be some discretion” with vaccines that do not prevent critical diseases.
Kennedy has long expressed concerns with vaccines commonly provided to children. His platform emphasizes the dangers of certain pharmaceutical products and environmental toxins, as well as their contributions to chronic diseases and increased healthcare expenditures.
