San Francisco has traffic cameras charging fines based on driver income

The legislation made clear that “a designated jurisdiction shall reduce the applicable fines” by 80% for “indigent persons,” and by 50% for those under 250% of the federal poverty level.

San Francisco authorities launched new traffic cameras that seek to deter speeding, but the cameras apply different penalties and fines based solely on the income level of the driver.

 

Officials with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency said the cameras are a “tool to address excessive speeding and reduce severe and fatal injury traffic collisions.” They launched the effort under a bill signed two years ago by California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom.
