Michael Stewart, the president of the Satanic Grotto, tried to perform a Black Mass inside the Kansas State Capitol and punched Marcus Schroeder, a Christian who intervened to stop him.
Brooklyn Schroeder, the wife of the young Christian activist, provided an exclusive reaction to The Sentinel after her husband was arrested and jailed amid the Friday morning altercation.
Stewart was surrounded by local media and Christian counter-protesters as he started to perform the Black Mass, even though he was previously barred from performing the ritual inside the Kansas State Capitol and was restricted to conducting the event outside of the building.
Schroeder then intervened, pulling papers out of Stewart’s raised hands, which moved Stewart to punch Schroeder twice, landing two blows before police tackled Stewart to the ground.
Brooklyn Schroeder told The Sentinel that her husband was initially “not detained and was let free by police after they got his side of the story,” but said they later returned to detain him.
She added that the officers “came back to ‘question’ Marcus and get a written statement,” telling her that “he was not going to be detained” but arresting him for alleged disorderly conduct.
