Officials in Texas said on Monday that they would continue to prevent illegal crossings after the Supreme Court ruled that the Biden administration could remove razor wire on the border.

State officials recently assumed control of Shelby Park, a public park in the city of Eagle Pass next to the Rio Grande, preventing federal agents from entering the nearly three-mile stretch of the border. Five members of the Supreme Court decided in favor of granting an emergency request from the Biden administration to remove razor wire in the area.

Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott released a statement asserting that the legal process was “not over” and that the razor wire is an “effective deterrent to the illegal crossings Biden encourages.” He added that he would defend the “constitutional authority to secure the border.”

Texas Department of Public Safety Spokesman Chris Olivarez added in a release that the state would maintain “current posture in deterring illegal border crossings by utilizing effective border security measures” such as razor wire and physical barriers.

“The logical concern should be why the federal government continues to hinder Texas’ ability to protect its border, all while allowing for the exploitation, dangerous, and inhumane methods of permitting illegal immigrants, including children, to illegally cross a dangerous river where many have lost their lives,” he continued. “Texas is the only state using every strategy and resource to protect its sovereignty, combat criminal activity, and discourage illegal immigration.”

The conflict between the state of Texas and the federal government comes after federal officials opposed the efforts from Texas to install razor wire and floating barriers in recent months. Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott recently endorsed a bill criminalizing illegal entry and reentry into Texas, rendering the charge an offense under state law in addition to federal law.

United States Customs and Border Protection has encountered more than 7.5 million individuals entering the country illegally since Biden assumed office. The illegal crossings also correspond with drug trafficking and taxpayer expenses related to services for the illegal immigrants.
