The typical car insurance rate across the country increased by 15% last year, while some states saw double-digit percentage increases in rates, according to new data released by Insurify.

American drivers now pay over $2,300 per year on average for full coverage, even as rates surpass $3,000 in six states, the insurance comparison shopping website revealed. The car insurance price hikes in 2024 come after an even more substantial 24% increase in 2023.

The cost of car insurance increased the most in Minnesota, Maryland, and California, with increases ranging between 48% and 58%. Those three states each had severe weather events in recent months, including massive hailstorms in both Minnesota and Maryland. California meanwhile more than doubled mandatory liability limits for car insurance at the start of 2024.

Insurify commented that car insurance expenses may increase because of legislative changes, surges in vehicle thefts, rising accident rates, and ostensible “climate risks” linked to severe weather that car insurance companies are increasingly considering in their risk assessments.
