The second administration of President Donald Trump shuttered the controversial CBP One mobile app and canceled appointments for foreigners seeking asylum in the United States.
CBP One enabled foreigners to schedule appointments at ports of entry, including forty-seven airports, after which the foreigners were paroled on two-year grants and allowed to seek work.
The website and social media pages for Customs and Border Protection announced after the inauguration on Monday that a functionality of the mobile app which “allowed undocumented aliens to submit advance information and schedule appointments at eight southwest border ports of entry is no longer available, and existing appointments have been cancelled.”
Customs and Border Protection allowed over half a million individuals to enter the United States over the past two years through CBP One, including more than 110,000 individuals from Cuba, more than 210,000 individuals from Haiti, more than 93,000 individuals from Nicaragua, and more than 116,000 individuals from Venezuela, according to federal data released last fall.
Vice President JD Vance has called the existence of CBP One “the most underreported scandal” under the administration of President Joe Biden over the past four years. South Dakota Republican Governor Kristi Noem, who was nominated as the next Homeland Security Secretary, vowed during her confirmation hearing last week that she would shutter CBP One.
Some media reports indicated on Monday that foreigners attempting to enter the United States had their appointments scheduled through CBP One abruptly canceled as the app shut down.
Biden has overseen record levels of illegal immigration over the past four years. Trump has promised to enforce border security laws and otherwise limit illegal entries into the country.
