Corey Comperatore, a husband and father who served his community as a firefighter and devoted church member, was murdered on Saturday while protecting his family from gunfire at a rally where former President Donald Trump was nearly assassinated.

Trump was fired upon at a rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania, but his life was spared as he turned his head at the last moment and the bullet meant for his skull instead nicked his ear. Comperatore, a fifty-year-old resident of Sarver, Pennsylvania, covered his family with his own body in order to protect them from the bullets, but was tragically killed in the process.

“Yesterday time stopped. And when it started again my family and I started living a real-life nightmare,” his daughter, Allyson Comperatore, wrote on social media. “The media will not tell you that he died a real-life superhero. They are not going to tell you how quickly he threw my mom and I to the ground. They are not going to tell you that he shielded my body from the bullet that came at us. He loved his family. He truly loved us enough to take a real bullet for us.”

Comperatore was a former chief of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company, which released a statement lauding his sacrifice. His daughter also revealed that he was “a man of God, loved Jesus fiercely, and also looked after our church and our members as family.” An online fundraiser launched for the Comperatore family raised millions of dollars.

Trump commented in an initial statement after the failed assassination that all Americans should “hold in our hearts the memory of the citizen who was so horribly killed.” Pennsylvania Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro also honored Comperatore at a press conference on Sunday and ordered all flags to be raised at half staff in the commonwealth to honor him.

“Corey was a girl-dad. Corey was a firefighter. Corey went to church every Sunday. Corey loved his community,” the official said. “Corey dove on his family to protect them last night.”

Two other attendees were seriously wounded at the event: David Dutch, a fifty-seven-year-old from New Kensington, Pennsylvania, and James Copenhaver, a seventy-four-year-old from Moon Township, Pennsylvania. Both were in stable condition on Sunday.
