Officials at the Transportation Security Administration unveiled new prototype technology that will allow travelers to conduct a self-service security screening as they enter airports.

The new TSA system, which will soon be tested at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas with TSA PreCheck passengers, will have a video monitor that allows travelers to “complete screening at their own pace.” Automated exit doors will open once the process is completed such that travelers “can gather their belongings and head to their flights.” TSA officers will be present to offer assistance as needed but will not conduct the self-screening process.

“We are constantly looking at innovative ways to enhance the passenger experience, while also improving security,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in a statement. “This self-service prototype allows our trusted travelers to complete the screening process at their own pace.”

TSA officials and the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate said they would “carefully study the results of this assessment before they announce a timeline for any future deployment of this prototype to other checkpoint lanes or at other airports.”

The introduction of self-service security comes as the TSA grapples with worker shortages and increased travel demand following the lockdown-induced recession. Officials reported a 6% travel volume increase between the holiday travel season of 2022 and the same period in 2023. They expect a similar volume increase for the upcoming spring break travel rush.

The budget signed by President Joe Biden for fiscal year 2023 provided pay increases for TSA employees to “bring the agency in line with the rest of the federal government.” Officers received an average pay increase of 26% while some received raises as high as 40%.
