House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, called on four Democratic mayors who preside over sanctuary cities to defend the controversial policies.
Members of the House Oversight Committee will hold a hearing next month about sanctuary jurisdictions, which are “states, counties, or cities that put some limits on how much they are willing to cooperate” with federal agencies as they seek to arrest and deport illegal aliens.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston were each asked to provide testimony next month.
Comer said that the House Oversight Committee is “investigating sanctuary jurisdictions across the United States and their impact on public safety and the effectiveness of federal efforts to enforce the immigration laws of the United States.” The lawmaker contended that sanctuary policies indeed “hinder the ability of federal law enforcement officers to effectuate safe arrests and remove dangerous criminals from American communities, making Americans less safe.”
The hearing comes as President Donald Trump issues various executive actions to secure the southern border and deport illegal aliens, policies that many elected Democrats have opposed.
“Trump took decisive actions to restore the rule of law with respect to immigration enforcement,” Comer continued. “In addition to the efforts of the Trump administration to ensure federal immigration enforcement can proceed unimpeded, Congress must determine whether further legislation is necessary to enhance border security and public safety. It is imperative that federal immigration law is enforced and that criminal aliens are swiftly removed from our communities.”
Trump has overseen a rapid decrease in attempted border crossings during the first days of his administration. The returning commander-in-chief also shuttered a mobile app that the Biden administration had been using to welcome foreigners and more quickly grant them asylum.
