Massachusetts Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren claimed that presumptive Democratic nominee and Vice President Kamala Harris has been unsuccessful in decreasing crossings at the southern border because Congress has not passed funding for necessary resources.
President Joe Biden selected Harris at the start of his term to handle the immigration crisis, yet the nation has witnessed record illegal entries over the past four years. Warren said in an interview with CNN host Jake Tapper that the border “ultimately has to be solved by Congress.”
“We need the tools in order to have more resources at the border, to have more resources in the states and cities that are supporting migrants, and I believe we need to create a pathway to citizenship,” she contended. “All of that is a part of what we need to do for comprehensive immigration reform. Kamala Harris will work with Congress and get that done.”
Tapper noted that mass immigration is a vulnerability for Democrats in the upcoming election. New surveys have demonstrated that a majority of Americans, including nearly half of Democrats, would support mass deportations of illegal aliens and similarly aggressive policies.
Harris was indeed criticized by conservatives after she only visited the border several months following her designation as border czar. She claimed the flow of illegal immigrants should be prevented by addressing the “root causes” of immigration, such as economic instability and corruption, leading the Biden administration to spend heavily on job creation in Latin America.
Warren also asserted the need for a broader “pathway to citizenship” last month as she commended Biden for signing an order offering legal status, as well as a path to residency and citizenship, to half a million illegal aliens married to Americans. “We need a pathway to citizenship for people who are here, for spouses, for dreamers, for essential workers, for people who serve in our military, for people who come to school here,” she continued.
