Haywood Brown, the associate vice president of academic affairs at the University of South Florida, resigned from his position after leaked audio revealed that he tried to circumvent a ban on diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in the state merely by renaming his office.
Brown said in a presentation last month that he avoided state laws against the controversial programs, comments which came after the Florida Department of Education made clear that institutions are banned from “using state or federal funds to administer programs that categorize individuals based on race or sex for the purpose of differential or preferential treatment.”
“My office changed its name, and we’re able to do that to culture and enrichment,” Brown said. “This is now how we address our issues. And who can argue against culture and environment?”
