Kennedy Jr. unveils possible rule change for chemicals in foods

FDA officials currently strongly encourage food companies to submit generally recognized as safe notices, but they can merely “self-affirm that the use of a substance” meets the status.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced new efforts to revise federal rules and stop allowing food companies to declare the chemicals in their products as safe for consumption.

The official directed the Food and Drug Administration to “explore potential rulemaking” to revise the “generally recognized as safe” self-affirmed pathway, which will “bring transparency to American consumers” while enhancing the oversight of ingredients used in food products.

Kennedy remarked in a statement that “for far too long, ingredient manufacturers and sponsors have exploited a loophole that has allowed new ingredients and chemicals, often with unknown safety data, to be introduced into the food supply without notification to the FDA or the public.”
