The number of sanctuary cities and other jurisdictions offering protection to illegal aliens has surged in recent years, especially since President Donald Trump started his first term.

The jurisdictions, which vow to “obstruct federal immigration enforcement” by refusing to cooperate with deportation efforts, can be found across the country, according to a new report from the Federation for American Immigration Reform.

There were less than a dozen such jurisdictions only thirty years ago, but there were over 560 jurisdictions as of 2018, and as of last month there were over 1,000 jurisdictions.

The organization observed that sanctuary jurisdictions “shield illegal aliens from immigration enforcement, openly undermining the rule of law.”

Among the jurisdictions with sanctuary policies are seventeen states with statewide sanctuary initiatives. The report warned that “there has also been an alarming trend of some localities strengthening their preexisting restrictions on cooperating with the federal government.”

While some states have preemptively banned localities from offering sanctuary to illegal aliens, the Federation for American Immigration Reform warned that only three states with such laws, namely Arkansas, Montana, and West Virginia, are truly free of sanctuary jurisdictions.
