Planned Parenthood received thousands of dollars from the University of Texas by means of a sub-award of funds from the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
Texas Republican Representative Chip Roy said in a letter last week to Allan Cole, the dean of the social work school at the University of Texas, that the institution received $526,000 in federal grants to evaluate a program that offers “inclusive, trauma-informed sex education to youth, designed to meet the specific needs and concerns of teens and young adults in foster care.”
But the institution offered Planned Parenthood of Illinois a sub-award of roughly $49,000 over the past year and a half. The letter from Roy asked why Planned Parenthood received the funds since the organization provides free abortions and “gender-affirming hormone therapy to transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive folks” regardless of their “immigration status.”
At least some branches of Planned Parenthood are involved with “sex education for youth in foster care,” according to the website for one branch of the organization located in California.
Roy noted that the University of Texas is ranked “second in the nation in federal research expenditures among public higher education systems,” meaning that members of Congress must understand “why federal grant recipients are entering into partnerships with abortion and so-called ‘gender-affirming care’ providing organizations and under what circumstances.”
The lawmaker also asked whether the partnership with Planned Parenthood of Illinois is “consistent with Texas law” since the state of Texas indeed “prohibits the use of public money or public assistance to provide minors with gender-affirming procedures and treatments.”
Planned Parenthood has received more than $699 million in government funds in the last fiscal year, according to their most recent annual report, marking a 4.2% increase from the previous period, while the organization received $998 million in private contributions and bequests.
Planned Parenthood also reported that they murdered a record number of preborn babies during that same time horizon. Other data show an increased number of abortions across the nation, even in states like Texas which claim to have banned abortion in recent years.
