Editor's Note: This article is from Woke Wars, an email-only newsletter from The Sentinel published six days per week to cover the cultural insurgency of wokeness.
We have all had enough of walking on eggshells with our speech.
Whether you want to use the term “political correctness,” or the slightly newer term “wokeness,” to describe the trend toward censorship to avoid offending some minority or oppressed group, our culture has simply grown tired of policing our speech constantly.
That attitude even extends to our very children.
Out of the mouths of babes.
One child went viral on social media for correcting First Lady Jill Biden after she said “Happy Holidays” to children assembled at the White House rather than “Merry Christmas.”
That child was heard shouting “Happy Christmas” when our First Lady greeted the children with a neutered and unenthusiastic “Happy Holidays,” after which she corrected herself.
The fact that political correctness and woke speech codes continue to plague even declarations like “Merry Christmas” shows how subversive those speech codes can be.
Christmas is a holiday that is utterly foundational to the West, and particularly the Christian heritage of the West. The intention to erode the public acknowledgement of Christmas is more accurately an erosion of the very Christian history of our society.
The war on Christmas rages.
This principle can be extended to taking down statues of founding fathers, using preferred pronouns in our email signatures, and employing terms like “partner” to describe wives and husbands out of fear that the person may be “married” to a person of the same sex.
All of these speech codes present themselves as beneficent efforts to avoid offense, but they actually subvert reality disliked by those who enforce those speech codes.
We can all learn from that child who corrected our First Lady. We need to boldly embrace and extol our faith, our heritage, and every other foundation of our civilization.
