Three thieves attempted to rob a Republican staffer and his friend on Sunday in Washington, DC, according to a statement from Georgia Republican Representative Mike Collins.
The lawmaker revealed that the assailants threatened the two young men at gunpoint in Navy Yard. He remarked that “one attacker took a watch, the other took a fist to the face” and that the pair were unharmed, but expressed concern about overall lawlessness in the city.
“Our nation’s capital has become a warzone because of pro-criminal policies,” Collins said. “Thank the good Lord, after fending off the assailants, both young men are safe.”
The staffer likewise said in an interview that the attack was driven by insufficient efforts to enforce the law and to prosecute violent offenders.
“It’s a shame our nation’s capital is a showcase for failed Democrat policies and violent crime as opposed to the greatness of our country,” the staffer commented. “The crime is so commonplace now many people don’t even report it because they know the city government will do nothing or just release the criminals to keep offending.”
Police in DC confirmed that they were searching for a vehicle “involved in multiple armed robbery offenses across the city targeting people's money and jewelry.” They shared an image of the car and invited residents with knowledge of the incident to call law enforcement.
The staffer is far from the first federal employee to be affected by elevated crime in DC: Texas Democratic Representative Henry Cuellar was carjacked at gunpoint late last year by three armed robbers in knit caps and ski masks near his home in the capital city, while a staffer for Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul had trauma surgery last spring after a random attack.
