Starbucks stores in urban parts of the country have dealt with homelessness and crime, which dissuade customers from spending time in the stores. The company reversed their open door policy two months ago. File Image.

Starbucks chief executive Brian Niccol told corporate employees that he expects them to take more responsibility in the success of the company following a recent round of mass layoffs.

Niccol dismissed some 1,100 employees, about half of whom worked at corporate headquarters in Seattle, as the brand battles lackluster sales. The executive unveiled several reforms, such as bringing the 40% of their 16,000 corporate employees who work remotely back to the office.

“We’re not effective on how things get to the store, and we’re not effective in making decisions and then holding each other accountable to those decisions,” Niccol told employees during an internal forum at headquarters. “This is why we had to make the changes that we had to make.”
