Officials with the Biden campaign are capitalizing on the recent conviction of former President Donald Trump with an aggressive new advertising campaign ahead of their first debate.

Trump was convicted over falsifying business records to make a hush money payment, a case which conservatives say represented lawfare meant to diminish his chances at reelection. The new thirty-second commercial seeks to strike a contrast between the presumptive Republican nominee and President Joe Biden while highlighting the legislative agenda of the latter.

“In the courtroom, we see Donald Trump for who he is. He’s been convicted of thirty-four felonies, found liable for sexual assault, and he committed financial fraud,” the narration says as dramatic images of Trump in court flash across the screen. “Meanwhile, Joe Biden’s been working: lowering health care costs and making big corporations pay their fair share.”

“This election is between a convicted criminal who is only out for himself,” the narration continues as a mugshot of Trump appears, “and a president who is fighting for your family.”

The new advertisement is reportedly a component of a $50 million campaign in battleground states ahead of the first debate between Biden and Trump at the end of June. The two candidates agreed to a set of rules that include microphones which mute themselves as soon as time is expired, an apparent attempt to decrease improper interruptions.

Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt asserted that the new advertisement shows how Democrats “weaponized the justice system against President Trump,” while the commercial “once again proves the sham trial was always meant to be election interference.”

“The contrast between President Trump’s strength and success versus Crooked Joe Biden’s weakness, failures, and dishonesty will be made clear on the debate stage,” she added.
