Elderly veteran kicked out of nursing home, replaced by illegal immigrants

Korean War veteran Frank Tammaro told reporters he feared that he would be “on the curb” after receiving a notice from his nursing home only six weeks before the facility was scheduled to become an illegal immigrant shelter.

Korean War veteran Frank Tammaro, who is ninety-five years old, was forced out of his nursing home earlier this year so that New York City could house illegal immigrants.

Tammaro told reporters he feared that he would be “on the curb” after receiving a notice from Island Shores Senior Residence in Staten Island, New York, only six weeks before the nursing home was scheduled to become an illegal immigrant shelter.

The owners of the facility, a nonprofit organization called Homes for the Homeless, had informed residents last September that they were considering selling the building but promised that they would find a buyer who would keep the nursing home intact. Homes for the Homeless instead cut a deal with New York City officials to use the facility as a home for migrants.

Staten Island Councilman David Carr, a Republican, told local news that he and Representative Nicole Malliotakis, a fellow Republican, contacted Homes for the Homeless with multiple interested buyers but were met with “dead silence.”

Months later, Homes for the Homeless informed Carr that they were no longer selling the property and would instead work with city officials to house migrants. The elderly residents, however, were forced out with minimal time to adjust, Tammaro said at a press conference.

“One day there was a notice on the board. I think that gave us a month and a half to find out where we were going to go," he remarked. “I thought my suitcases were going to be on the curb because I'm not that fast.”

Tammaro added that he tried to protest the decision but said there was not enough time to induce change. “I said, 'no, no, no, no, you're not moving me,' and they said, 'yes, yes, yes we are.' Everything was done behind closed doors,” he continued. “We didn't have a chance to actually make any attempt to stop them because there wasn't enough time."

"My blood pressure went through the roof when I found out Homes for the Homeless cut a deal with the City of New York to turn Island Shores into a migrant shelter," Carr commented. “Our tax dollars as citizens of New York should not be utilized to house citizens of other countries, especially at the expense of our senior citizens and veterans who put their lives on the line, paid taxes their whole lives and built our communities.”

New York has received a record number of illegal immigrants in recent months. New York City Democratic Mayor Eric Adams recently thanked President Joe Biden for fast-tracking work authorization and deportation protection for over 470,000 Venezuelan immigrants despite having previously said that the migrant crisis was on track to “destroy this city.”

Adams said two months ago there was “no more room” for additional illegal immigrants. "We need to call a state of emergency, and we need to properly fund this national crisis," he said.
