Massive spending on woke programs at Wikipedia draws attention of Elon Musk

The criticism toward the woke priorities of Wikipedia comes after studies have determined that there indeed exists a leftist bias on the website, which is one of the most popular in the world.

Elon Musk drew renewed attention in recent days toward the progressive bias at Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit parent company of Wikipedia, as shown by their budgetary priorities.

The parent company spent over $50 million of their $177 million budget between 2023 and 2024 on diversity programs, as shared last week by the popular social media account Libs of TikTok. Those programs included efforts to “coordinate across stakeholders and ensure equity in decision-making” with respect to categories like education, culture, heritage, and gender.

“Stop donating to Wokepedia,” Libs of TikTok said. “Stop donating to Wokepedia until they restore balance to their editing authority,” Musk added while sharing the post from the account.

The criticism toward the woke priorities of Wikipedia comes after studies have determined that there indeed exists a leftist bias on the website, which is one of the most popular in the world.

One analysis from the Manhattan Institute found earlier this year that there was “a mild to moderate tendency in Wikipedia articles” to associate ideologically right-of-center public figures with “more negative sentiment” than left-of-center public figures on pages written in English.

“Moreover, terms that suggest a right-wing political stance are more frequently connected with emotions of anger and disgust,” the entity concluded. “Conversely, terms associated with left-leaning ideology are more frequently linked with the emotion of joy than are right-leaning terms. Our findings suggest that Wikipedia is not entirely living up to its neutral point of view policy, which aims to ensure that content is presented in an unbiased and balanced manner.”
