Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of obstruction and concealing an individual to prevent arrest.
The charges stem from an April incident in which she allegedly helped Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, an illegal alien, evade agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement during a scheduled court appearance. Dugan now faces charges over the incident.
The official reportedly escorted Flores-Ruiz and his attorney through a restricted jury door, effectively bypassing ICE agents who were waiting to take him into custody.
Flores-Ruiz had appeared in court that day facing misdemeanor domestic abuse charges, and after Dugan allegedly let him escape, federal agents apprehended him outside the courthouse while he tried to flee on foot.
Members of the Wisconsin Supreme Court have already suspended Dugan from her judicial duties, citing the need to maintain public confidence in the judiciary system, while a reserve judge has since been appointed to temporarily fill her position on the bench.
Dugan's legal team remains defiant about the charges. “As she said after her unnecessary arrest, Judge Dugan asserts her innocence and looks forward to being vindicated in court,” her attorneys said in a written statement.
Dugan is expected to enter a plea at her upcoming hearing, where procedural matters will likely be addressed as well. If convicted on both counts, she potentially faces up to six years behind bars.
